According to a Republican article on MassLive.com:
"The expansion would provide 200 construction jobs and permanent jobs for 50 doctors and 500 staff members, including nurses, technicians and physician's assistants. About 3,800 people work at the medical center, which sits on nearly 54 acres in the city's North End."
500 new staff members? Nice. You go Baystate!
On a sad note for old-building buffs, Springfield street's 1920's era Porter-Harris building will be razed to make way for the new digs. And the digs is big. Replacing the old bricks will be a building eight-stories high, with nearly 600,000 square feet of walking-around room.
And you thought getting around the hospital was an adventure now!
If everything goes as planned, the construction will begin late next year or early 2009, with completion slated for 2012.
The Republican article noted that Baystate is the only hospital in Western Massachusetts that performs open- heart surgery. Medicine has sure come a long way from the days of this announcement of February 16, 1910:
